Upload it to Google Shopping ads and you have done exactly what Google recommends. Use the same image in Google Display ads and you have done exactly what Google advises against.
Same image, same company, same product. Opposite rules depending on the channel. This is the white background paradox display shopping, one of the most counter-intuitive cases in the platform and one of the most costly when you do not know about it.
I have encountered this problem on every e-commerce team managing both Shopping and Display with a single set of product images. The result was almost always the same: Display campaigns with white-background images had significantly lower CTR than campaigns using contextual images. They were not disapproved, the problem was more subtle and harder to diagnose.
The documented paradox: two opposite rules on the same thing
The starting point is that both rules are officially documented by Google. These are not informal best practices or interpretations, they are explicit instructions in the official documentation of the two formats.

Two different Google teams, one developing Merchant Center, one developing Google Ads, have produced opposite best practices for the same visual element. This is not an error: it is the correct response to two different problems. Understanding why requires thinking about the display context, not the image itself.
Why Google Shopping ads campaigns want a white background
The Google Shopping carousel is a completely standardised visual environment. A user searching for "men's running shoes" sees a product grid where every listing has the same structure: product image, name, price, seller. The context is neutral by definition, white background of the Google search page, listings displayed horizontally side by side.
In this environment, the white background of the product image is not a problem, it is an advantage. The image integrates perfectly with the surrounding environment, keeps the product at the centre of visual attention without distracting elements, and meets the expectations of a user who is comparing products. A coloured background or a lifestyle context stands out as an anomaly, it draws attention, but not necessarily the right kind.

There is also a direct comparison dimension. When a user views the carousel, Google Shopping ads campaigns are evaluated side by side. A well-executed product image on a white background communicates professionalism and clarity, the product is visible, all key product information is immediately readable, and perceived quality is higher than an image with a busy background that obscures the product.
Why Google Display ads advise against a white background
The Display ad context is the opposite of Shopping. Google Display ads are shown while the user browses editorial content, news articles, blogs, entertainment sites, vertical portals. The vast majority of these sites have a white or very light background. It is the dominant background colour of the editorial web.
Imagine a 300×250 banner with a product image on a white background appearing in the sidebar of a news article. The site has a white background. The banner has no visible borders (many Display formats do not require them). The result: the product appears to float in empty space, with no visual separation from the surrounding environment. The ad is not visually distinct from the page, and an ad that is not distinct is not seen.
The problem is not aesthetic, it is one of visibility. A Google Display campaign ad with a white background on a white-background page has effectively less contrast with the environment than an ad with a coloured background or a lifestyle image with a dark background. Visual contrast is one of the primary attention-capture mechanisms, reducing it means reducing the likelihood the user will notice the ad.
There is a second, subtler problem: Google Display ads in Responsive format are assembled dynamically, the system overlays text (headline, description) on the image. If the image has a white background and the overlaid text sits on a layout area with a light background from the host page, an overlap of whites is created that makes the ad illegible.
The contextual mechanism: why the rules are opposite
Once the display context of each format is understood, the paradox dissolves. The rules are not opposite because someone made a mistake, they are opposite because the problems they solve are opposite.

The key is the distinction between active search and passive browsing. A user actively searching for a product in Google Shopping is already motivated, they are looking at images with intent. The product image on a white background gives them what they need: a clear view without distractions.
A user browsing a news site is not looking for your product, the ad must first capture their attention, then communicate the product. A lifestyle image with strong visual subject and context is more effective at interrupting passive browsing. A white background does not capture attention because it creates no contrast with the environment.
Performance Max: the edge case that complicates everything
Performance Max distributes ads across all Google channels, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps. This means images uploaded to a PMax asset group can appear both in a Shopping context (white background optimal) and a Display context (white background problematic).
How is this contradiction resolved? Google has an answer in separating data sources: the feed structure determines which images reach which placement. Images for Google Shopping ads in PMax come primarily
from the Merchant Center feed, via the image_link attribute, which holds the product data Google uses to match listings to queries, and has its own neutral-background requirements. Images for Display,
Discovery and YouTube in PMax come from the asset groups, where Google recommends lifestyle images with a non-white background.
In practice, many advertisers do not structure PMax campaigns this way. They upload a single set of images to the asset groups and expect the system to optimise. The result is a compromise: images that perform reasonably across all channels but are optimal for none. Either product images on a white background that underperform on Display, or lifestyle images used for Shopping placements with sub-optimal results.
How to structure the photography workflow to resolve the paradox
The solution to the paradox is not to choose between a white background and a contextual background, it is to produce both. This does not require two separate photography sessions. It requires two setups in the same session, or a post-production workflow that produces both sets from the same shot.
Solution 1, Two setups in the same session. During the photography session, photograph each product both on a white background (for Shopping) and in a real context, on a wooden surface, a fabric, in a lifestyle environment (for Display). Simpler products require 10–15 additional minutes for the second setup. The additional cost is marginal compared to the performance difference it produces.
Solution 2, AI background removal for Shopping, keeping the original for Display. If you already have high-quality lifestyle images, use them for Display and produce white-background versions for Shopping by removing the background via AI (Adobe Firefly, Remove.bg, or similar tools). The result is acceptable for Shopping but rarely identical to a professional white-background photograph, shadow and reflection rendering is often not optimal. It works as a scalability solution for large catalogues.
Solution 3, Reverse workflow: white background as base, AI background addition for Display. The opposite of the previous approach. Start from professional white-background images and use generative AI to add contextual backgrounds for Display. The risk is detection of artificial backgrounds by the Merchant Center system (if modified images end up in the feed), but for Display asset groups this risk does not apply.
