I do not memorise the full spec sheet. After enough creative batches I keep one reference tab open and check the same three numbers every time: ratio, resolution, file size. That is what the image asset specifications come down to in daily work, three constraints that decide whether an asset can serve and how it looks when it does. Everything else people argue about, the "perfect" pixel dimension, the ideal compression, is noise compared to getting those three right. In the accounts I manage, the recurring problem is never an exotic spec violation; it is someone exporting at the bare minimum resolution or letting the platform crop a square down to landscape and wondering why the product disappeared. The reference I keep open
Three ratios cover almost every image asset I prepare. Square 1:1 at 1200x1200 is the one I always produce first, because it is the required ratio and the most placement-flexible. Landscape 1.91:1 at 1200x628 expands serving into wider slots. Portrait 4:5 at 1200x1500 unlocks vertical inventory that has grown a lot on mobile feeds. Across all of them the file rule is the same: JPG or PNG, maximum 5120 KB per image. The single most useful line on the whole spec sheet is not a dimension at all, it is the safe area: keep important content inside the central 80% of the frame. The outer 20% gets cropped depending on where the asset serves, and you cannot control which crop happens, the determination is auction-dependent. So I compose every asset as if the edges will be cut, because on some placements they will. When I skip this, the symptom is predictable: a product that looks centred in the upload preview but loses its top or side once it actually serves.
Ratio: the eligibility gate

The same image is downscaled across dozens of placement sizes and rendered on high-density screens, so starting at the recommended 1200 on the long edge keeps it sharp everywhere. Starting at the minimum means it is already soft before Google does anything to it.
On file weight, the 5120 KB ceiling is almost never the real constraint. A well-compressed 1200x1200 JPG usually lands between 150 KB and 400 KB with no visible loss, nowhere near the limit. I only reach for PNG when I need transparency or crisp flat graphics; for photographic product shots, high-quality JPG is smaller and looks identical. The practical rule I follow: export at recommended resolution, compress to the point just before artefacts appear, and stop, the goal is the sharpest asset under the limit, not the smallest file. What I notice actually affects asset ranking

When I upload four genuinely different relevant images per ad group rather than four crops of the same shot, Google has more combinations to test, and the report surfaces a clear winner faster. Starved of options, the system has nothing to learn from and ratings stay flat. This is the same logic behind dynamic image assets pulled from the landing page, more relevant raw material gives the algorithm more to optimise against.
One last thing the report has taught me: ranking is not static. An asset rated "Best" in month one can slide to "Good" as the query mix shifts or as fresher assets enter the rotation, and I have seen the reverse happen too, a quiet asset climbing once the obvious winners fatigue. So I do not treat the asset report as a one-time grade. I check it on the same cadence I review search terms, retire the assets that have flatlined at "Low" for several weeks, and replace them rather than leaving dead weight in the group. The accounts where asset ranking genuinely compounds are the ones where someone is steadily feeding in new, relevant, spec-correct images, not the ones where four images were uploaded at launch and never revisited.
Where these specs meet Display banners
Image assets in Search are only half the picture. The moment a creative is eligible to serve on the google display network, a second set of numbers comes into play, and confusing the two is the mistake I correct most often in inherited accounts. The asset specs I described above (1:1, 1.91:1, 4:5 at up to 5 MB) govern asset-based ads: responsive display ads and the assets you feed into performance max campaigns. Fixed-size banners are a different ad type entirely, with their own display ad sizes and a much stricter maximum file size. Knowing which rulebook applies before you open the export dialog saves an entire round of rejected uploads, and it is the first thing I check when a designer hands me a folder of creatives.
Here is the split I keep straight. For uploaded banners, the limit is 150 KB and the accepted file formats are JPG, PNG and non-animated GIF, exact pixel dimensions only. The workhorse is the 300 x 250 medium rectangle, which serves across desktop and mobile and carries the most inventory of any unit; I always build it first. After that I add the 300 x 600 half-page, the 728 x 90 leaderboard, and on the small end a 250 x 250 square image and a 200 x 200 small square for tight in-feed slots. Each is an exact banner, not a flexible asset, so a clear call to action and the product or service have to fit the frame without cropping. The 150 KB cap is unforgiving: a photographic banner that looks fine at 400 KB has to be compressed hard, which is exactly why I reserve heavy product photography for the asset-based formats and keep banners graphic and lightweight.
For asset-based ads the logic flips back to ratio. A responsive set, the default format on the network, wants both landscape images at 1.91:1 and a 1:1 square at up to 5 MB, and Google assembles the layout. Search-landing page ads and Display banners pull from genuinely different spec sheets, and the cleanest mental model I have found is: exact pixels and 150 KB for uploaded banners, ratios and 5 MB for everything asset-based. From that master I crop by hand to 1.91:1 and 4:5 rather than letting the system auto-crop, because automatic cropping centres on the geometric middle, not on the part of the image that matters. Hand-cropping each ratio means I control what survives.
Then I export to JPG at high quality, confirm each file is well under 5120 KB, and check one last time that nothing important strays into the outer 20%. Only then do they go into the ad group.
